Unhygienic conditions prevail in Milk Colony,Dhanas, where the presence of cattle is giving residents a harrowing time.

There are around 800 families in the area,of which between 30 to 40 have cattle, and they tie them to poles or trees in parks. While the rest of the city can enjoy a stroll in their sector parks, the residents of Dhanas have no such luck. Rather, their parks are strewn with cow dung.

Area resident Sandeep Sethi said,“Just because some families in the area rear cattle, others are being forced to live in unhygienic conditions. Most of the parks are full of cows and buffaloes, since the owners have no space to keep these in their houses. Consequently, parks are full of cow dung. Our children have no place to play. In fact,we do not want them to venture out.”

The condition becomes worse during the rainy season. The area is a breeding ground for mosquitoes and flies, making residents prone to diseases. The residents said the community centre in the area is also in a pathetic state because of the presence of cow dung. Broken roads add to the woes.

Another resident Kumar Chand says that numerous complaints to the authorities have fallen on deaf ears. He says that they have approached the area councillor as well as the officials concerned. The area, however, has seen no improvement. Cattle owners should be shifted to other areas, they said.
