After successfully inculcating the reading habit among rural children through his Pahianwali library sewa,Dr Jaswant Singh,an NRI,has now opened a library in his native town Judahana in Ludhiana district. Unlike many other retired people,he used his more-than-15 years experience of serving as librarian in the US for the mobile library and provided this services to children of seven villages with 1,600 books for five years. On this project he spent Rs 26 lakh. He said,This project of mine broke the myth that children do not love reading.
Dr Jaswant did not keep his experience to himself but also shared it with his friends and inspired them to open libraries in their villages. As a result of which one has already come into existence and one will come up soon.
Recently,Dr Jaswant also established a library in his village Judahan in an area of 1,450 square feet. The newly constructed hexagonal building includes an audio-visual room,a computer room,a store room,two books rooms and a large reading room. Dr Jaswant said,I have spent $35,000 on its construction,other than the cost of land and have deployed two employees for running the library and one as caretaker. This library has more than 4,000 books on different subjects,of which 1,500 are for children.
About three years ago,Dr Jaswant Singh inspired one of his NRI friends,Joginder Singh Kalsi,to open a library in his village Singh Dhesian in Jalandhar distict. He said,It is running very successfully and people of different age groups do come there to read books. After witnessing the success of this library,I also decided to establish one in my village.
