Labour class excluded by city planners: Social activists

Right to Housing is a human right guaranteed in law, along with food, clothing and medical care: Singh.

The labour class was excluded by the city planners when Chandigarh was planned years ago, pointed out social activists at a state-level seminar on ‘Homelessness, Housing Policy and Advocacy’, which was organised at the ICSSR Complex, Panjab University (PU), on Tuesday.

Organised by the National Forum for Housing Rights (NFHR) in association with Action Aid Association, Shehri Beghar Awaas Adhikaar Manch (SBAAM), Chandigarh, and Society for Equality, Development and Justice (SEDJ), Haryana, the seminar aimed at highlighting the problems faced by homeless people.

While drawing attention towards the recent demolition of colony-5, Manmohan Singh from SBAAM said that there was no proper place allocated for labourers, rickshaw pullers and daily wagers to set up their homes in the city.

Right to Housing is a human right guaranteed in international law, along with food, clothing and medical care, he added.

The seminar revolved around the need for ensuring  sustainable livelihood and witnessed participation from presidents of labour unions from Panjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, and a number of social activists.

Three sessions were organised on homelessness and Right to Housing, building city and state-level forums for housing rights campaign and efforts towards adequate housing.
