Kumar Vikramjit,a third-year student of UIET,is contesting the elections as an independent candidate for the presidential seat, against the popular candidates of INSO,ABVP and the alliances of SOPU and PUSU.
Vikramjit and his friends used to support various other students parties on campus and decided to contest elections independently after becoming disillusioned with their corrupt practices. The decision to file the nomination was made on Monday morning,on the day of filing the nominations.
The small group of UIET students started campaigning yesterday evening after attending classes, and missed classes today to continue with the campaign. When asked about his attendance record,Vikramjit says,I missed one class on the day of filing nominations and the classes held today. My attendance should be above 95 percent.
His friends say they support Vikramjit,a simple boy from Patna who aspires to become an IAS officer, for his sincerity and hard work. There is not one person in the entire department who can speak ill about him, says Gagandeep Singh,a classmate.
Vikramjit says,I know I will not win these elections, but the motive is to bring a change and tell people that there are alternatives. He says that he used to assist other parties in their cause, but realized that their aim had been trivialized to gain votes. I dont want the beautification of the campus or better bathrooms or street lights. Students can sit on the floor also and study. However, the faculty should be improved and placements should be regularised, he added.
Mostly, people do not even know the name of the elected president because he vanishes after the elections. The various party presidents are the visible figures, who gain votes from UIET and later never even pay a visit, said Prince,a student of UIET. He added that the bigger parties on campus engage in violence during elections, because of which, good companies have blacklisted PU and do not come here for placements.
