Killed in CAR,Nepalese’s body handed over to family

The letter also notes Hollande’s sorrow over the death.

President of France Francois Hollande has told Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that his government has ordered an inquiry into the death of a Nepalese national,Karan Bahadur B K,who was fired upon by French forces in Central African Republic (CAR),mistaking him for a suicide bomber. The family of the Nepalese national is settled in Panchkula.

Delivering a letter signed by French Ambassador to India,Francois Richier,to the family members,Defence Attache with the French Embassy in New Delhi,Benedict Smith,who visited the family on Monday,expressed grief over the death. The letter also notes Hollande’s sorrow over the death.

Karan Bahadur,who worked as a cook with Waheguru travel agency in Central African Republic,was killed on March 25 after he was mistaken for a suicide bomber by French forces. The French forces in charge of protecting the airport of the CAR capital at M Poko fired at his car as he was shifting from Central Africa to West Africa. In the letter to the wife of deceased,Seema Karna,the French government has also expressed concern with the Nepalese Embassy in Delhi.

The letter mentions that French forces in charge of protecting the airport of CAR capital intervened “in a confusing situation against three vehicles threatening to penetrate it,at a time when the forces had just been fired at from an unknown source”. “These vehicles were carrying Chadian and Indian nationals and despite the warning shots fired by the guarding forces,the vehicles continued to proceed at high speed. In the firing two Indian nationals got killed,” the letter adds.

Karan’s distraught family said that they had lost their bread-winner. Karan is survived by wife,two daughters and mother. They have been living at an accommodation provided to his father-in-law,Dal Bahadur,at government primary school in Panchkula where he works as a watchman.

Karan’s brother,Prakash B K,said that there should be a fair inquiry into the matter. “It is an innocent who has been killed,” he said.

Karan had been working as a cook with Wahe Guru travel agency for the last five months in CAR. “He had moved to CAR for better wages,but our family is now shaken due to the incident,” said Prakash. The body was handed over to the family members on Sunday afternoon and the funeral was performed on Monday.
