Khap victim reunites with husband

The 22-year-old woman of Kheri village,whose three-year-old marriage was “annulled” by the Benewal khap panchayat over a gotra controversy on January 31,reunited with her husband on Wednesday after 11 days. Kavita was able to meet her husband Satish at his sister’s house in Supra village,family members said. This came a day after Meham Chaubisi,an umbrella body of khap panchayats,said the couple could live together — not in Kheri but at the nearby Meham. The decision followed pressure from the police after Kavita registered a complaint on February 3. The couple will stay in Supra until accommodation is arranged in Meham. Meham police station SHO Kartar Singh Dahia said they were closely watching the situation and the police would be on alert till the couple starts living peacefully with their son without any interference by the representatives of Benewal gotra and its khap panchayat. He warned that any social boycott or threat to couple would land the khap panchayat in trouble.
