In a show of growing solidarity, 111 farmer union members joined the hunger strike at the Khanauri border on Wednesday, marking the 337th day of the dharna and the 51st day of Jagjit Singh Dallewal’s fast. The protest continues without any response from the central government to the farmers’ demands.

The hunger strike was staged near the barricades at the Khanauri border along NH-52, where Haryana authorities had erected a wall, similar to the Shambhu border. On Wednesday, Haryana security forces moved closer to Punjab’s side and set up fresh barricades, preventing farmers from advancing. Despite concerns, the hunger strike proceeded peacefully, with the participating farmers clad in black gowns and carrying placards pledging to “sacrifice before Dallewal.”

Gurvinder Singh, a Bathinda-based farmer, said, “Farmers will return to the pandal at night and resume their sit-in on Thursday morning. A tent will also be set up to protect them from the cold.”

Among those leading the strike were Sukhjit Singh Hardojhande, who had previously joined the hunger strike in November, and leaders from Faridkot, Fazilka, Sangrur, Moga, Bathinda, and Amritsar.

Dallewal’s health deteriorates

As Dallewal’s hunger strike reached its 51st day, concerns over his health grew. While the Punjab government reported to the Supreme Court that his condition was stable, doctors warned he was nearing multiple organ failure and struggling to consume water.

The ongoing dharna, which began on February 13, 2024, under the banner of SKM (non-political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, has seen no resolution, intensifying the farmers’ demand for government action.
