Caught on the wrong foot by the Green Bench of Himachal Pradesh High Court, and facing a penalty of Rs 100 crore for environmental and land violations, the Jaiparkash Associates Limited (JAL) chose to knock at the doors of the state government to seek some respite only to face rejection.
Sources said that the companys representatives submitted an explanatory note to the Chief Secretary Sudripto Roy and also to Chief Ministers office to defend the JALs stand on the project.
Ironically, the company, which has been told to dismantle its thermal plant by the court, and which has been accused of lying and defrauding the government,is lobbying for the government support to its stand,in case it moves the Supreme Court or a review petition in the High Court.
However,Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal, who is already facing the heat from the Opposition, has ordered the officials not to concede any request of the company. Instead,he said, the court orders should be implemented.
The government will not file any appeal against the court orders. The company has also been told to comply with the orders, instead of lobbying at political or bureaucratic levels, a senior official said.
In fact,Dhumal has already directed the Chief Secretary to ensure that Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up to probe the role of erring officials, starts its work soon.
The SIT,on its part, has sent notices to the JAL seeking its replies on more than a dozen points including jobs doled out to the retired government servants, their wards and relatives in the company, and all admissions granted under the management quota to children of government servants.
