The Indo-Tibet Border Police (ITBP) has decided to deploy more forces on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and would set up 35 new outposts on the Indo-China border. It already has 142 outposts – from Karakoram Pass in Ladakh to Jachep La in Arunachal Pradesh – covering 3,488 km of the Indo-China border.
Right now,the gap between the outposts varies from 50 km to 130 km. We have identified 35 places where new outposts will come in consultations with the Army, said RK Bhatia,Director General,ITBP. He was in Panchkula on Saturday to preside over a passing out parade at ITBPs Basic Training Centre,Bhanu.
Bhatia said that 102 outposts on LAC would also be augmented with one platoon to one or two company of the force. One company has about 128 soldiers. We want to reduce the distance between the posts, he added.
The DG,however, brushed aside reports on intrusions in India from the Chinese side. The border is peaceful.
The ITBP,he added,is on a major expansion drive. Twenty battalions, which used to have four companies, will now have six. In addition to that,13 more battalions with six companies each will be raised, said Bhatia.
ITBP has a total of 47 battalions – five being engaged in anti-Maoist operations.
The ITBP is also procuring the advanced version of INSAS Rifles and bullet-proof jackets. Recently,it procured 70 all-terrain vehicles. We need to have better surveillance systems. We are looking for things which suit us, added Bhatia.
