Leaders of several khap panchayats, farmer bodies as well as activists from different organisations on Sunday gathered at Haryana’s Meham (Rohtak) to attend a mahapanchayat that was organised in support of wrestlers who have protesting against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president and BJP MP from Uttar Pradesh, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
On Sunday, the mahapanchayat also decided that a candlelight march will be taken out at Delhi’s India Gate on May 23 in support of the wrestlers, while issuing an appeal to the people — especially women — across the country to come join them.
The leaders said that after the candle march of May 23, a second womens’ mahapanchayat will be held near the new Parliament building on May 28.
The group of protesting wrestlers – including the likes of Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik, who hail from Haryana – have been demanding action against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, whom they have accused of sexual harassment and criminal intimidation.
Sunday’s mahapanchayat also demanded a lie detector narco test of Singh.
Brij Bhushan SIngh has been claiming that the athlete’s protest at Jantar Mantar is being driven by politicians from Day One. “It is clear that these athletes are being used by Congress and other Opposition parties.”
