Youth held with stolen bike
MOHALI:A Chandigarh resident was arrested with an allegedly stolen motorcycle in Mohali,the police said. A police party,led by Sub-Inspector Faqir Fateh Singh,signalled a motorcycle with a Chandigarh registration number to stop at a checkpost at the Phase 3-5 light point. Upon interrogation,motorcyclist Ram Sharma of Sector 40-A,Chandigarh,failed to prove his ownership over the vehicle. Preliminary investigations revealed that the motorcycle was stolen from Chandigarh and the accused was allegedly on his way to Mohali to sell it off. A case under Section 411 of the IPC has been lodged against the accused.
Lecturer tests positive for swine flu
CHANDIGARH:A 26-year-old woman,who recently returned from a trip to the US,tested positive for swine flu on Friday. The patient has been quarantined at her maternal residence in Sector 19 while her in-laws have been quarantined at their residence in Mohali. The patient is a lecturer at a private college in Sirhind. Meanwhile,four fresh samples were collected which include those of a couple from Sector 49,a doctor from Manimajra and a woman from Sector 19.
Air Force sergeants wife ends life
CHANDIGARH:A 32-year-old woman committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at the Air Force quarters in Sector 47 on Thursday. Pushpa Gupta was reportedly under depression for the last one month,the police said,adding that no suicide note was found from the house. According to the police,her husband Kanhiya Lal,who is a sergeant in the Air Force,was away on duty when she allegedly took the extreme step. The deceased is survived by her husband and two minor children.
Trinamool Cong group meets Advisor
CHANDIGARH:A deputation of Trinamool Congress led by Shambhu Banerjee met the Advisor to the Administrator,Pradip Mehra,and submitted a memorandum regarding various problems plaguing the city. The deputation said some sectors were receiving muddy water. It was also claimed that vacant properties of Super Bazar are providing shelter to anti-social elements and drug addicts which is creating nuisance for residents. It was demanded that these properties be allotted to needy persons.
Man hangs self after tiff with wife
CHANDIGARH:A 34-year-old man reportedly committed suicide at Raipur Rani village on Thursday night. The deceased,Rajinder,was a resident of Sirmaur,Himachal Pradesh,and was visiting his in-laws in the village. Police said a tiff with his wife Usha had forced her to come and stay with her parents since Diwali. He had reportedly come to take Usha back. After a altercation over dinner,Rajinder went to his room and locked himself up. Usha later found his body hanging and informed the police.
Quality management meet at 3BRD
CHANDIGARH:A three-day workshop on Quality Management System (QMS),being conducted by Colonel (Retd) B J Singh,commenced on Friday at 3 BRD Air Force Station,Chandigarh. Officers from units under the Maintenance Command are attending the workshop. Air Commodore R Sharma,Air Officer Commanding 3 BRD,addressed the gathering and welcomed the speaker. The workshop aims to increase quality awareness among BRD personnel which will have a direct impact on production. Colonel (Retd) B J Singh is an expert in the field and has served in the Army as an engineer. Since retirement,he has been undertaking quality inspection in various organisations.
Declamation contest at Army School
CHANDIGARH:As many as 15 teams from various schools of Panchkula and Chandigarh participated in an inter-school English declamation contest organised by the Army Public School,Chandimandir,on Friday. The school has been organising this event for the last eight years. The proceeding commenced with the arrival of the chief guest,Brigadier B Chopra. The oratory skills of participants were assessed by a panel of three judges. Brigadier Chopra applauded the efforts of students and teachers and emphasised that the school is the best platform to shape young minds in enhancing confidence and public speaking skills. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by school principal Lieutenant Colonel N R Baberwal (Retd).
Conference on river hydraulics
MULLANA (AMBALA):The Civil Engineering department of MM College,Mullana,organised a two-day national conference on river hydraulics in association with the Indian Society for Hydraulics,Pune. Around 55 experts from across the country participated in the meet.
