IMD forecasts light to moderate rain in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh in coming days

Residents are advised to avoid going outside during thunderstorm or hailstorm and to suspend farming activities during these periods

Amid the ongoing heatwave for the past around two weeks in Punjab, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday evening issued a weather forecast for Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh, predicting light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, dust storms, lightning, and gusty winds in the coming days.

Rain and thunderstorm forecast:

In Punjab, light to moderate rain is expected at a few places on June 6, with isolated occurrences on June 7 and June 8. The rain spells are likely to be accompanied by thunderstorms, dust storms, lightning, and gusty winds (50-60 kmph) on June 6, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) on June 7.

In Haryana and Chandigarh, light to moderate rain is forecast at isolated places from June 6 to June 8. Thunderstorms, dust storms, lightning, and gusty winds (40-50 kmph) are expected at isolated places on June 6, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) on June 7.

Moderate thunderstorms with winds (40-60 kmph) and lightning are very likely over parts of Ambala, Kalka, Barara, Jagadhri, Chhachhrauli, Narayangarh, and Panchkula. Light thunderstorms with winds (30-40 kmph) and lightning are expected in Karnal, Indri, Radaur, Nilokheri, Thanesar, Shahabad, Ambala, Kalka, Barara, Jagadhri, and Chhachhrauli.

Similar weather conditions are predicted in Punjab for parts of Sunam, Sangrur, Patran, Samana, Patiala, Nabha, Budhlada, Lehra, Mansa, Barnala, Dhuri, Malerkotla, Moonak, Rajpura, Dera Bassi, Fatehgarh Sahib, Amloh, Khanna, and Payal.

Heatwave conditions:

Heatwave conditions are likely to persist at isolated places in the southern and western parts of Punjab and Haryana for the next 24 hours before easing off.

Temperature outlook:

No significant change in maximum temperatures is expected over the next five days. In Punjab, the maximum temperature was recorded at Pathankot (45.4°C), while at remaining places of the state, it hovered between 41.0°C and 45.0°C. In Haryana, the maximum temperature was recorded at Nuh (45.6°C). The remaining places of Haryana witnessed a temperature between 40.7°C and 45°C. As compared to Tuesday, there was a rise of 2.4°C in average minimum temperature in Haryana on Wednesday.
