(Credit: Unsplash)A major water crisis has erupted in New Sunny Enclave, Sector 125, Greater Mohali, where the water supply has been completely shut down for the past three days. With no water for cooking, bathing, or even using toilets, hundreds of families are struggling to manage basic daily needs.
Taranjeet Singh, executive engineer (XEN) PSPCL, Mohali confirmed to The Indian Express that last night the anti-theft team conducted a raid in Sunny Enclave and found a tubewell running on an illegal “kundli” power connection. The team imposed Rs 12-lakh penalty and issued a notice. The matter has been registered at the PSPCL Anti-Power Theft Police Station, and further action is underway.
Residents initially assumed that the tubewell motor had malfunctioned but later discovered it was operating through electricity theft. Following the raid, the PSPCL flying squad disconnected the supply, triggering a complete water shutdown. Locals are demanding immediate intervention from the administration to restore water supply and take strict action against those responsible for the illegal connection.
With water supply halted, residents are now forced to rely on private tankers available only at inflated prices. People warned that if the crisis is not resolved soon, they will be left with no option but to protest on the streets. Citizens allege that both the administration and the developer remain silent while families struggle even for drinking water.
Residents claim the builder had been running the tubewell on stolen electricity for a long time. With the department’s crackdown, the public is now suffering the consequences. Many households are now buying water at high cost, while tanker rates have surged.
Sector residents Ram Murti Sharma, Malkit Singh, S C Arora, Mohit Kumar, and Harpreet Singh said the builder should have settled his outstanding bills with PSPCL instead of resorting to electricity theft. If the issue is not resolved, they vowed to launch a public protest.
Responding to the matter, councillor Harinderpal Jolly said he has directed the builder’s officials to take immediate steps to restore water supply. “If water is not restored immediately, residents will take to the streets on Saturday,” he warned.
