Singh,a resident of Mohali, allegedly operated from cyber cafes in Mohali and Chandigarh while sending these emails that accused his female colleague of being “loose” character, the police said.

The emails, which continued for the last one-and-a half-months,accused the female worker of being engaged in immoral activities. Perturbed by the regular emails,Dr Grewal had lodged a complaint with the cyber crime cell, which traced the emails to a cyber café and then zeroed in on the Singh.

“It was not only professional rivalry but also meant to harm the reputation of the institute. I don’t think anyone should send anonymous emails to anyone when technology is so advanced that the origin of the emails can be traced,” said Dr Grewal.

“We traced the email and found it was being sent from a number of cyber cafes. The fake ID was created on the same day when the first email was sent. We took action accordingly,” said SP Madhur Verma.
