HPU fined Rs 1 lakh for wasting student’s four years

Tarun was given provisional admission in the Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Application (PGDCA) course in October 2005 by HPU,as he was not able to pass one subject in his BA final year examination,for which a supplementary examination was to be held in future.

When Tarun applied for admission to the second semester of PGDCA course after clearing the first semester in July 2006,he was denied admission as the result for the supplementary examination of BA final year was not declared.

On July 22,2006,Tarun’s result for supplementary examination was declared. But the university refused to admit him to the second semester,declaring him a late candidate,and asked him to get readmitted in the first semester of PGDCA.

Following this,Tarun approached the district consumer forum. HPU contested the petitioner student’s claim and said that the delay in declaring his result happened because the candidate had submitted the form in the wrong department.

The district judge today found it to be a case of negligence on part of HPU,for which it ordered payment of Rs 1 lakh as compensation and Rs 2,500 for expenses incurred on legal process,to be paid within 45 days.
