There was commotion aboard the Kalka-New Delhi Shatabdi train when a 61-year-old passenger fell unconscious on Wednesday morning. Timely first aid by a doctor on board, Dr Manoj Gupta, a Panchkula-based cardiologist, proved vital in saving the life of Narendra Mohan, a diabetic resident of Chandigarh en route to New Delhi.
According to railway staff, Mohan missed his diabetes medication as a , result of which he lost consciousness while in the train’s washroom just short of Kurukshetra. The train was promptly halted at Kurukshetra railway station, and Mohan was taken to a local hospital before being transferred to Ambala Hospital. His condition is now reported to be stable.
Dr Gupta recounted, “I was travelling on the Kalka Shatabdi when an urgent call for a doctor came through. Rushing to the scene, I found the passenger, in his 60s, in a critical condition, displaying heart attack symptoms. With no pulse and no breathing, I immediately administered Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) to revive him, aiming solely to save his life as he was alone.”
Despite Mohan being unconscious and his phones locked, contact was established with his wife after he regained consciousness. Bhupindered Kumar, the Deputy Train Superintendent, corroborated the incident, noting that Mohan, due to missed morning medications, initially received glucose before experiencing further complications, necessitating immediate aid and eventual hospital transfer.
Another passenger Ashok Chaudhary praised Dr Gupta and railway staff for their swift response, acknowledging that without their actions, saving Mohan’s life would have been improbable.
Narender Mohan, the patient, when reached for comment, stated, “I blacked out while travelling to New Delhi. I’m currently being transported from Kurukshetra to a local Ambala hospital, and my family is with me.”
