DEPUTY Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal has questioned the longevity and motives of Surat Singh Khalsa’s indefinite hunger strike to demand the release of Sikh prisoners.

“Can a person survive hunger strike for more than 200 days?” asked Sukhbir in what is his first direct attack on Khalsa’s hunger strike that began on January 16. The SAD president was here to pay obeisance at the Golden Temple on Sunday.

His remarks came two weeks after a crackdown of Punjab Police on the leaders related with Khalsa’s campaign. Many Sikh leaders, who have extended their support to Khalsa, were arrested.

“The Punjab government has done more than enough on the issue of release of Sikh prisoners. However, some have been misguiding people on this issue. They want to exploit the sentiments of the people of Punjab with their irresponsible approach towards this issue. We have brought Davinderpal Singh Bhullar and Gurdeep Singh Khera to Punjab. But many prisoners have been facing conviction for crime in other states. We also feel that the release of Sikh prisoners have been delayed because of the instructions from the Supreme Court. But some people do not want to understand the legal complications,” Sukhbir said.
He added that cases of 70 per cent prisoners are under trial.

“Some of the prisoners are locked up in jails for crimes and we cannot help them. But some people have been playing politics by ignoring the real problem,” he said.

On the demand for Kamal Sharma’s resignation, Sukhbir said law will take its own course in the case registered against the personal assistant of the state BJP president.

“There would be zero tolerance for the culprits. The case has nothing to do with Kamal Sharma, but his personal assistant,” Sukhbir said.
So far, no political party in the state had taken such a strict stand on Khalsa’s hunger strike owing to political implications.
