Former CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda felicitates Saweety Boora at Ghirai village in Hisar on Sunday. (Express Photo) Former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Sunday said that players like Saweety Boora – who brought laurels to the country by winning medals in international sports – will be made DSP when the Congress government is formed in the state.
Hooda was speaking at a function at village Ghirai (Hisar) to felicitate Saweety Boora, who won a gold medal at the recent Women’s World Boxing Championships held in New Delhi. Hooda lauded the family members of Sweety and the villagers for showing their progressive approach by encouraging their daughters to participate in sports competitions. According to Congress leaders, many eminent players and coaches of the country and the state had also come to participate in the felicitation ceremony. On the occasion, Hooda said that during the Congress tenure, a sports policy was formulated to encourage the youth of Haryana towards sports and to motivate sportspersons.
The former CM said: “Under the ‘Padak Lao, Pad Pao’ policy, the government honoured more than 750 sportspersons by giving them direct appointments to government posts. Under the sports policy, players were given appointments on higher posts like DSP. Along with this, a three per cent quota was given to sportspersons in group-C and group-D jobs so that youths participating in sports do not feel insecure about their future and livelihood.”
Hooda said: “The BJP-JJP government took away from the players the right of appointment to the post of DSP. Along with this, sports quota in jobs was also almost abolished. The government is not maintaining sports stadiums that were built in every village during the Congress tenure. It is clear from the activities of the government that it wants to make Haryana’s youths drug addicts, not players.”
Hooda, who is the leader of Opposition in the state, said that he is upset about medal winners like Sweety Boora not being given the post of DSP. “When the Congress government is formed, the policy of ‘Padak Lao, Pad Pao’ will be implemented again and all the sportspersons who are being ignored by the government at present will be appointed to higher posts,” Hooda promised.
Later, Hooda also went to a dharna site at Talwandi Rana (Hisar). The sit-in was organised by local “Road Bachao Sangharsh Samiti”. The villagers said the government closed the Hisar-Talwandi Rana road near Hisar airport without any advance notice. “Due to this, the distance of many villages from Hisar has increased up to four times, taking them much longer to reach the city (Hisar).”
