The Indian hockey team, which won a bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics, returned to the country on Sunday and visited Sri Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) in Amritsar to pay their respects.
Upon their arrival in Punjab, the players were welcomed at Sri Guru Ram Dass International Airport by Punjab ministers Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal, and Harbhajan Singh ETO.
A large gathering of parents, hockey enthusiasts and senior officials from Hockey Punjab was present to greet the team. Lok Sabha member Gurjeet Singh Aujla also congratulated the players.
Among those who arrived at Amritsar airport were team members Manpreet Singh, Harmanpreet Singh, Hardik Singh, Gurjant Singh, Shamsher Singh, Mandeep Singh, Jarmanpreet Singh Ball, Sukhjeet Singh, and Jugraj Singh.
Speaking to the media, team captain Harmanpreet Singh expressed gratitude for the opportunity to pay respects at Sri Harmandir Sahib. He attributed the team’s success to the blessings of Guru Sahib and prayed for even better performances in the future.
Harjinder Singh Dhami, president of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, honoured the players at the Information Center by presenting them with a golden model of Sri Harmandir Sahib, religious texts, and a siropa (robe of honour).
Advocate Dhami remarked that it is a matter of pride that whenever the Indian hockey team had included a substantial number of players from Punjab, they had achieved great successes, including the recent bronze medal win. He congratulated the players and offered prayers for their future accomplishments, noting that Punjab players have revived the state’s historic connection with hockey.
Harmanpreet also expressed gratitude to the SGPC for the honour bestowed upon the team. Other players, including Mandeep Singh and Jugraj Singh, along with the team’s coach and family members, were present during the visit.
