Himachal Pradesh records 27% reduction in road accident fatalities in 2024: DGP

Officials said the World Bank-funded Himachal Pradesh State Road Transformation Project played a key role in reducing road accidents.

Himachal Pradesh saw a 27 per cent reduction in road accident fatalities, as well as a 14 per cent reduction in total road accidents during the first three months of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, according to official figures. Additionally, there has been an 18 per cent reduction in accident injuries this year.

According to the figures released by the office of Director General of Police Sanjay Kundu, there were 478 road accidents between January 1 and March 31, 2024, resulting in 180 deaths and 687 injuries. During the same period in 2023, there were 558 road crashes, resulting in 248 deaths and 889 injuries. These figures were compiled under the Live Road Crash Data, a component of the state traffic police.

A senior police officer stated, “The state has witnessed a noteworthy decrease in road crashes and fatalities, thanks to the implementation of new technological measures and modern equipment provided through the World Bank-funded Himachal Pradesh State Road Transformation Project (HPSRTP). The project, with a total sponsored amount of Rs 47.79 crore, is a five-year programme being executed through traffic, tourist and railway police, which serve as the nodal agency on behalf of the Himachal Pradesh police department.”

In 2023, the state saw a 13 per cent reduction in road accidents compared to 2022. As many as 2,255 accidents were recorded, resulting in 882 fatalities and 3,542 injuries. However, in 2022, Himachal Pradesh saw 2,597 road accidents, resulting in 1,032 deaths and injuries to 4,063 people.
