Girls outshone boys, securing top seven positions in the Class X results declared by the Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education (HPBOSE) in Dharamshala on Thursday.
The results, however, registered an improvement of 5.19 percentage points from the previous session.
This year, as many as 75,862 out of a total of 95,495 candidates cleared the Class X examination, recording a pass percentage of 79.8 per cent, up from 74.61 per cent last year.
Girls dominated the merit list, with 88 out of a total of 117 students in the Top 10 positions are girls. Only 29 boys made it to the list.
Saina Thakur of Neugal Model Public Senior Secondary School, Bhawarna, in Kangra district topped Himachal Pradesh, scoring 99.46 per cent.
Ridhima Sharma, a student of R K Senior Secondary School, Ghandalwin (Bilaspur), was close second, securing 695 marks (99.29 per cent).
The third position was shared by two students — Mudita Sharma, student of Modern Public Senior Secondary School, Swarghat, and Parnika Sharma from Minerva Senior Secondary School, Ghumarwin — both scoring 694 marks.
A total of 117 students secured positions in the top 10 rankings, with 97 from private schools and only 20 from government schools, reflecting the ongoing gap in performance despite considerable public investment in government school infrastructure.
The exams were held from March 4 across 2,300 centres, excluding the Lahaul-Spiti and Pangi regions. For the first time, OMR sheets were used in the board exams, and a stepwise marking scheme was introduced for evaluation.
Of the total of 95,495 candidates, 75,862 passed, 13,574 failed, and 5,563 were placed in the compartment (re-appear) category. Additionally, 427 candidates remained absent, and 63 were listed under RLD (Result Later Due).
Certificates for successful candidates are being made available via DigiLocker. The Class XII results are expected to be declared in the next two days.
Meanwhile, HPBOSE Secretary Dr Major Vishal Sharma informed that students seeking re-evaluation or rechecking can apply online via their schools until May 30. The fee is Rs 1,000 per subject for re-evaluation and Rs 800 per subject for rechecking. Applicants must have scored at least 20 per cent marks in the subject concerned to be eligible for re-evaluation.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu congratulated the students for successfully passing the examinations. “There is no shortcut to success in life and it can only be attained through unwavering dedication, sincerity and devotion,” the CM said.
The achievement of the students was the result of their consistent hard work and dedication towards their studies. The students should never forget the contribution made by their parents, teachers and their well-wishers in guiding and supporting them throughout their academic journey to achieve success,” the CM added.
