Haryana police to launch more all-women units across state

The Haryana Police is in the process of launching all-women police units in almost all districts of the state to handle offences committed by and against women.

The Haryana Police is in the process of launching all-women police units in almost all districts of the state to handle offences committed by and against women. To begin with, some of the units will be set up in Gurgaon,Karnal,Rohtak,Faridabad,Hisar,Panchkula and Ambala.

The Haryana police had, recently, constituted an all-women traffic wing in Gurgaon, comprised of 24 female police officers, who are entrusted with the responsibility of nabbing erring women drivers, particularly those who indulge in drunken driving. “It was required for long,as the women drivers otherwise tend to level all sorts of frivolous charges on male officers, who stop them for checking. In case the women police officers are there, such charges can not be made. We are in the process of setting up similar all-women wings in other urban districts of the state. In the first phase,Ambala,Panchkula,Hisar,Kurukshetra and Karnal are likely to be covered”,said a senior Haryana police official.

Along similar lines, the state police had set up all-women police control room units in a few districts across the state. The oldest such unit set up in Karnal is set to complete a year of being functional on Tuesday.

“Generally,we receive complaints pertaining to youngsters passing lewd remarks at the college or school going girls. Many times,if the offence is not serious,we detain such youngsters, call their parents and release them with a warning. In serious cases, legal action is initiated”,said Assistant Sub-Inspector Rajwati, who heads the all-women PCR unit in Karnal.
