(Express file photo by Jasbir Malhi) Overweight police personnel in Haryana will no longer be assigned field duties unless they get back in shape. State Home Minister Anil Vij has issued instructions directing the police department to identify all the overweight police personnel and shift them to police lines.
In written directions issued to the Additional Chief Secretary (Home), Vij said, “Many police personnel in the state police department have become overweight. All such personnel should be identified and transferred to police lines”.
The minister also told the ACS (Home) that all police personnel who are gaining weight need to get fit through exercise. “Only after that they should be put back on active duty,” he said.
The overweight personnel would have to go through the daily training schedule from 5.30 am to 6.15 am. Records will be maintained regarding the training schedule of all such police personnel and a detailed report will be sent to the police headquarters, officials said.
“It is worth mentioning that the fitness of police personnel is very important to curb crime. Keeping this in view, these directions have been given so that the state can be made crime-free,” a spokesperson for the Haryana government said.
Home department officials mentioned that there are several police personnel who could not perform their official duties in the required manner because of weight issues. Thus, it is required that they stay fit. They added that physical training instructors and yoga trainers shall be deputed in police lines across all districts of Haryana.
