Haryana mulls Cabinet rank for AG Mahajan

If the proposal is approved, it would be the first time in Haryana that an AG would have cabinet minister status.

The Haryana government is considering a proposal to accord the rank and status of a Cabinet minister to its Advocate General (AG), Baldev Raj Mahajan.

This would be for the first time in the history of Haryana that its AG would have the status of a Cabinet minister. Punjab AG Ashok Aggarwal already enjoys the rank of a Cabinet minister. When contacted, Mahajan (61) said, “I have also heard about it. The state government is considering it and probably they will take a final call in a couple of days.”

After the BJP came to power in Haryana last year, Mahajan was appointed as its top law officer on November 9. At the time he was picked by the government for the coveted post, senior advocate and former Chandigarh BJP MP Satya Pal Jain was also in the race. However, in April, Jain was appointed as the Additional Solicitor General of India for Punjab and Haryana High Court for a period of three years to take care of litigation pertaining to the Centre.

Mahajan succeeded Hawa Singh Hooda who remained the state AG during the 10-years tenure of the previous Congress government. Hooda did not have the Cabinet rank.

Mahajan, who hails from Amritsar, has had a long association with the RSS. He moved to Chandigarh in 1971 and started as a clerk with senior advocate D V Sehgal. He went on to obtain his LLB degree from Rajasthan and joined Sehgal’s team as an advocate. He is known as an expert in civil law. In 2013, he was designated senior advocate by the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Mahajan also served as national president of the Akhil Bharatiya Adhivakta Parishad and had resigned from the post after taking over as Haryana AG.
