Hacking contest not unethical, says St John’s,questions Goyal’s motives

The St John’s School controversy took another turn today with the school setting the record straight about the hacking competition held on its campus, which forms part of the ‘evidence’ submitted by complainant TK Goyal.

The hacking competition was held on October 20,2007 for students of Class VIII to X to teach them about issues related to cyber security.

Goyal’s sons, who were in Class V then, were not eligible to participate in the competition. Goyal had recently alleged that the school inculcated unethical modes of cyber surfing among students through the competition.

The school has now raised a question mark on Goyal’s motive to register a complaint after two years and that too for an event his sons did not participate in.

“Why did it take him two years to wake up to the issue? His intentions are under the scanner as he was never affected by the competition,” said the school spokesperson.

The school administration said the hacking competition was held to make students aware about protecting themselves from potential hackers. The school claimed that the contest was held in a controlled environment without using Internet and the addresses were hacked with the knowledge of the users.

“There was nothing unethical or criminal in the competition,” the spokesperson said, citing instances of hacking competitions held in different institutions all over the country.

Meanwhile, art teacher Michael Angelo Francis, accused by Goyal of showing adult websites to students, refused to comment on the issue. Sources, however, said the message sent by Michael to Goyal asking for forgiveness was “presented in wrong light.” Sources claimed that Michael had apologised for not including Goyal’s sons in a rock show that was held in September this year to mark the golden jubilee of the school.

Michael wrote that he forgot to inform them about the show due to which the boys could not participate in the band. The twins were a part of the band till Goyal pulled them out owing to ‘differences’ with Michael.

A letter in support of Michael Angelo Francis was sent to the Administration,District Education Officer and the media stating that the Education department did not conduct the inquiry, which found him guilty,in a fair manner. The letter signed by students, parents and alumni supported the teacher’s conduct in the school and also clarified the use of ‘objectionable’ words in a song played by the band, which Goyal had complained about.

“The song did have a few vulgar words but we were asked by Michael sir to replace them by another word which we eventually did during the show. The entire episode took place because he refused to promote Goyal’s sons in the school album,” said a student. Talking to Newsline ,another student alleged that Goyal had behaved in an autocratic manner with other teachers also.
