Chandigarh Administrator and Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria and Chief Secretary (Chandigarh) Rajeev Verma presented scholarships worth Rs 7.12 crore to 1,630 sportspersons and Rs 7.22 lakh to 12 coaches in a function organised at Tagore Theatre on Monday.
It was the second such function for Chandigarh players in the last three months and Kataria, who was the chief guest for the event, hoped that Chandigarh players would be motivated by these scholarships.
“We all have to realise the resolution of ‘a drug-free Chandigarh’ and that every child should join sports. Sports are not just competition but the basis of discipline, leadership, team spirit and determination in life and these qualities will help India reach the goal of a developed India 2047. These scholarships will help the players from Chandigarh to achieve their dreams and step towards winning medals for Chandigarh at the national as well as international arena,” Kataria said while addressing the players.
Earlier this year, Chandigarh Administration had given scholarships worth Rs 1.32 crore to 320 Chandigarh players apart from presenting cash awards of Rs 5.67 crore to 448 Chandigarh sportspersons. Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Dr Mansukh Mandaviya had presided over the function along with Kataria.
In Monday’s function, Kataria also announced the UT administration is holding the first International Chandigarh Marathon to be held on November 2 later this year. “The UT administration will hold the International Chandigarh Marathon on November 2 and a dedicated online portal has been launched for the event. Apart from that, the Chandigarh Administration had also launched a dedicated online cash award portal for players with an aim of transparent and quick prize distribution,” he added.
Prerna Puri, Secretary, Sports, Chandigarh; Sorabh Kumar Arora, Director, Sports Department, Chandigarh; Sanjay Tandon, President, UTCA, and Chairman, Standing Committee, Administrator’s Advisory Council of the Sports Department, too were present on the occasion.
