Shiromani Akali Dal district leader Parvinder Singh Sohana has accused the Punjab government of showing “utter negligence and insensitivity” toward Sikh heritage monuments, alleging that the historic Fateh Minar at Chappar Chiri (Mohali) remains closed due to the government’s apathy.

Addressing reporters at the site, Sohana said that the monument built during the Shiromani Akali Dal government under the late chief minister Parkash Singh Badal at a cost of hundreds of crores of rupees was intended to connect future generations with the legacy of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur. “But today, this iconic memorial stands locked and deserted because of the failure and incompetence of the present Aam Aadmi Party government,” he said.

Sohana pointed out that thousands of devotees and visitors who come to pay homage to Baba Banda Singh Bahadur are returning disappointed and angry, cursing the government for its neglect. He also interacted with visitors at the site who expressed frustration after finding the gates locked.

According to Sohana, when he spoke to an employee of the private agency responsible for the upkeep of the memorial, the staff member said that the company’s maintenance contract had expired and the government had not issued a fresh tender. “As a result, the agency withdrew its staff and equipment, leaving the memorial abandoned,” the employee reportedly told him.

The Akali leader demanded that the Punjab government immediately reopen and restore the Fateh Minar, emphasising that it is a vital institution for educating youth about Sikh history and heritage. “This memorial was built to honour the valour of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur and to inspire pride in Sikh history,” Sohana said. “But the AAP government’s neglect has turned this site of reverence into a symbol of apathy.”
