The Punjab Police had alerted the Rajasthan Police about the planned killing of the Karni Sena chief by members of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang in February this year.
Shri Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena president Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi was shot dead in Jaipur on Tuesday. Rohit Godara of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang took responsibility for the killing, which was caught on CCTV.
Sources in the Punjqb police said the Special DGP, internal security, had written to additional DGP, Special Task Force, Rajasthan, and the ATS (Anti-Terrorism Squad) had also sent a letter to the intelligence ADG (Additional Director General), warning them of a prospective attack on Gogamedi.
The Punjab police note, a copy of which is with The Indian Express read: “According to an input, notorious gangster
Sampat Nehra of Bishnoi gang, who is currently lodged in Central Jail, Bathinda, has plans to kill Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi, President of the Rajput community group ‘Shree Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena’ in order to incite religiously motivated riots in the state of Rajasthan.”
The input further revealed that Sampat Nehra had arranged AK-47, to accomplish the task through his associates outside.
Senior Punjab police officers said efforts are underway to dismantle the Lawrence Bishnoi gang in collaboration with central agencies and state governments.
The police have already arrested 29 gang members, involved in the killing of Sidhu Moosewala last June, and two gangsters had been killed in an encounter.
Approximately 70 associates of the Lawrence gang have been apprehended so far, said an officer of the Anti-Gang Task Force led by Promod Ban. Efforts are on to capture the handler of Lawrence Bishnoi, with tracking operations being conducted from Azerbaijan to India.
