In an attempt to monitor the performance of the contractual staff employed through a service provider, the Government Multi Specialty Hospital,Sector 16,is for the first time, going to appraise over 500 contractual employees working in various departments as paramedical staff including nurses, sanitation workers, data entry operators, ward boys, attendants, radiographers,OT technicians and lab assistants.

For the purpose,a performa,in the form of a questionnaire, has already been given to all the head of the departments who would be appraising the staffers based on specific parameters such as efficiency, conduct, punctuality, discipline, quality of work etc. The performance would be monitored after every six months and those found unfit on the parameters would be replaced.

Dr Rajiv Vadhera,Medical Superintendent, said,“ It is for the first time that we are going to appraise the contractual staff. The idea is to check whether the person recruited for a specific job is able to handle the work with efficiency or not. Once we have the appraisal forms with us ,we will be able to know on what all improvements do we need to make in order to provide better healthcare in the hospital to the patients”.

Sources say that in the past doctors in different departments had also been complaining to the hospital administration about non-performance of certain contractual employees. “Peeved by the number of complaints of staffers missing from duty or leaving much before the duty timings, the hospital authorities had had to devise a way out”,said a senior functionary of the hospital.

In fact, recently the department of Hospital Administration had also launched a drive to find out about the educational qualifications of these contractual employees after it came to their notice that most of the paramedical staff who were performing duties as lab assistants or operation theatre technicians were not qualified for it. The matter came to light when the hospital authorities verified the documents submitted by one of the lab assistant and found it fake.

After the verification drive, services of 20 contractual staffers were even terminated as their documents were found to be fake.

Prior to this, one of the drivers recruited by the hospital administration through contractor who was plying ambulance for the hospital was found to be colour blind. Following this incident, the hospital included a mandatory eye check up before recruitment of drivers even on contract.
