From Giani Zail Singh to Chandra Shekhar, Model Jail puts out list of its ‘famous inmates’

According to the sources from Model Jail, the list was taken out from the archives and put on the website. (Express Archive)Former president of India Giani Zail Singh and former prime minister Chandra Shekhar, and four former chief ministers including three of Punjab, along with senior political leaders of the country — are in the list of “famous inmates” of Model Jail of Chandigarh.

Meanwhile, IG (Inspector General) Prisons Pushpendra Kumar, said, “I am not aware of any such list which is published on the jail website. I will get it checked about it.”
According to the website, apart from the names of Giani Zail Singh and Chandra Shekhar, the list mentions former chief ministers of Punjab Surjit Singh Barnala, Parkash Singh Badal, and Beant Singh; former Union minister and Delhi chief minister Sushma Swaraj; Rajya Sabha member and former Haryana minister Randeep Singh Surjewala; former Union ministers Sharad Yadav and Gurdial Singh Dhillon; former president of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) Gurcharan Singh Tohra; former Lok Sabha Speaker Balram Jakhar; first MP from Chandigarh Parliamentary constituency Srichand Goyal; and politicians Jai Prakash Narayan, Harkishan Singh Surjeet, Sultan Singh, Avtar Kishan Malhotra, and Vijay Kumar Malhotra.
According to the sources from Model Jail, Chandigarh, the list was taken out from the archives and put on the website, just to mention which of the famous personalities of the country have spent time in the jail.
