Gang collects ‘road tax’ from commuters on Zirakpur-Rajpura stretch in Patiala, booked after video goes viral

Patiala police in Punjab registered an FIR after a viral video showed a gang illegally collecting “road tax” from commuters along the Zirakpur-Rajpura road on Ghaggar River.

While the police named two of the accused as Baljinder Singh Makhu and Harmanpreet Singh, their accomplices are yet to be identified.

Officers said the matter came to light when a local cab driver made a video in which the accused were seen collecting money illegally and even handing out “receipts” for the same. The clip was subsequently circulated on various social media platforms.

A case was registered under section 308(2) (extortion) of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita at Julkan police station. Further probe is underway.
