In a first of its kind initiative,a dedicated funeral home for Indians, particularly for Punjabis settled in USA,is set to come up in Fresno in California. A brainchild of Sikh organisation Damdami Taksal, the funeral home will be built at a cost of $300,000 in an acre-and-half of land.

Envisaged by Damdami Taksal about a year and half back, the initiative is set to take off in about a fortnight after clearing mandatory feasibility checks from Planning Commission and getting required environmental clearances,.

“After the go-ahead by Planning Commission and environmental clearance, the only thing awaited now is a building permit. We hope to get the approval for it in two weeks’ time from the public works department here before we begin construction,” Dr Buta Singh, who is associated with the project in USA,told The Indian Express over phone today.

Dr Singh said the funeral home would be ready by this year-end. “It would basically cater to the Indian community irrespective of whether they are Sikhs or Hindus. It would help Indians perform the traditional last rituals in a much more liberal manner as compared to the funeral homes already in operation,” Dr Singh added.

According to Dr Singh, the funeral home would have a gas-fired crematorium. “We would also make provision for assisting families that face financial crunch to perform the last rites of their dead.”
