According to Srishti Gupta, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Panchkula, after Akhtar was found dead at his residence, his family members informed the police, and their statements were recorded. Former Punjab director general of police (DGP) Mohammad Mustafa and his wife, former minister Razia Sultan, have been booked on charges of murder in connection with the death of their 35-year-old son, Aakil Akhtar. The police have also formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the case.
Akhtar, an advocate at the Punjab and Haryana High Court and a resident of Sector 4, MDC, Panchkula, was found dead at his residence on October 16. Four days later, on October 20, a First Information Report (FIR) under sections 103 (1) (punishment for murder) and 61 (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was lodged at the MDC police station in Panchkula against Mustafa, Sultan, Akhtar’s wife, and his sister.

As no foul play was initially suspected, a post-mortem examination was conducted, and the body was handed over to the family for last rites, she said.
Subsequently, “certain social media posts and videos surfaced, purportedly made by the deceased prior to his death, alleging personal disputes and apprehensions about threats to his life”, DCP Gupta added.
According to the police, on October 17, a complaint was received from Shamshuddin of Malerkotla, Punjab, alleging foul play in the incident. In view of the complaint and the contents of certain social media posts, the FIR was registered.
DCP Gupta added that an SIT has been constituted under the supervision of an ACP-rank officer to ensure a thorough, impartial, and evidence-based investigation.
Akhtar is the only son of Mustafa and Sultana. He was found unconscious at his Sector 4, MDC house by his family. He was immediately rushed to Civil Hospital, Sector 6, but doctors declared him brought dead.
His last rites were held at his ancestral village, Harda Kheri, in Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur.
As per the police, the viscera samples have been sent to the forensic department to identify a substance consumed by the deceased, but the report is expected to take two to three months.
