DESPITE drawing flak from all quarters for the indiscriminate installation of paver blocks, the Municipal Corporation (MC) on Thursday approved agenda items worth more than Rs 1.77 crore for the same.

During a meeting of the MC Roads committee held last week, officials were directed to prepare a detailed policy in this regard. However,it is yet to be prepared. Rather, suggestions mooted by Councillor Chander Mukhi Sharma were discussed and approved by the committee members.

According to the committee members,no paver blocks will be installed on any walking track in the greenbelts and parks. Walking tracks will be made of concrete,as was the practice earlier. Concern had been expressed over the fact that the paver blocks on walking tracks were not good for the knees.

According to the directions of the UT Chief Architect’s office, paver blocks up to 6 feet will be installed on pavements on the V-4,V-5 and V-6 roads. In booth markets, paver blocks up to 8 feet will be installed, while near the showrooms, these will go up to 10 feet. Parking lots will come up in the remaining area.

In residential areas, where 5 marla,8 marla or 10 marla houses are present, paver blocks up to 9 feet will be installed around the parks. This is to facilitate parking of vehicles,as there is not enough space in these areas. However,in parks near houses in an area of one canal or more, paver blocks will be installed up to 6 feet.

It was also decided that around religious places or educational institutes, paver blocks up to 12 feet will be installed. However,if the area available is more, then bay parking will be created.

For villages and colonies,it has been decided that on narrow roads where carpeting is not possible either concrete will be used or paver blocks be installed.
