Financier,son murder: Three get life term

Even as prime accused Raju and his wife Shilpa remain at large,three accused were sentenced to life imprisonment on Saturday for the abduction and murder of Sector 16-based financier Vinod Mittal and his 4-year-old son Yashan in February,2008.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Ritu Garg pronounced the verdict for the three Ashok Kumar,Sonu and Sanjay Kumar.

Apart from these three,Raju and Shilpa,a minor had also been charged in the case. The minors case is on in a juvenile court,while Raju and Shilpa have been declared proclaimed offenders (PO). Two others,Rajus mother-in-law Neeru Bain and his maternal uncle Kishan Lal,had also been arrested in the case but were acquitted by the court.

Life imprisonment with a fine of Rs 5,000 each has been awarded to the Ashok Kumar,Sonu and Sanjay Kumar under Sections 120b,201,302 and 365 of the IPC. We had demanded capital punishment but the the judge did not find the crime a rarest of rare case, said public prosecutor in the case,Dharampal Singh.

The case dates back to February 14,2008,when Mittal and his son Yashan went missing. The two had allegedly gone to Baltana to meet Raju,the prime accused in the case from whom Vinod Mittal was to collect some money. It was later learnt that Mittal was stabbed to death at Baltana by the Raju and some others the same night. They then threw the body in a nullah near Rajpura,along with Yashan,who was still alive.

Though the bodies could not be recovered,it was on the basis of circumstantial evidence and DNA reports that the charges of murder were framed against the accused.
