In a relief to passengers facing inordinate delay and cancellations, farmers squatting on railway tracks at Shambhu railway station in Patiala for 34 days suspended their sit-in on Monday, even as the Haryana Police refused to release three farmers arrested during ‘Dilli Chalo’ protests at the Shambhu and Khanauri border.

Tracks were cleared by 4.25 pm and train services on those tracks were resumed by 4.35 pm, according to the Ambala railway division office. Railway authorities said in the past 34 days,  2,210 trains, including mail express/passenger trains, were cancelled, while 2,227 trains were diverted.

They said 787 goods trains had to be diverted, while 431 trains had to be short-terminated and short-originated. Of the 431 trains, 209 trains were short-originated and 222 short terminated.

Wheat produce requires to be sent out of Punjab by train as the harvesting is over and almost all stock is procured.

“During this period, trains were running on the Ludhiana-Sahnewal-Chandigarh-Ambala Cantonment route instead of the original route of Ludhiana-Rajput-Ambala Cantonment. Many trains were running late by several hours,” the authorities said.

“Few BJP leaders have been engaged in the smear campaign against farmers. Now their central leaders are coming to Punjab for campaigning. So, along with our protests at Shambhu and Khanauri, we will protest at the venues of BJP star campaigners’ visit,” said Jagjit Singh Dallewal, coordinator of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political).

“Now our strategy is to start dharnas outside the houses of prominent BJP leaders in Punjab and Haryana. Their names will be announced at a protest rally at the Shambhu border on May 22, when the agitation completes 100 days,” BKU (Shaheed Bhagat Singh) leader Guramneet Singh Mangat told The Indian Express.
