Farmers hold dharna,lay siege to DC office in Mohali

Farmers from across the district under the banner of Bharatiya Kisan Union staged a massive protest dharna and laid siege to the office of Deputy Commissioner in Phase I here on Monday.

Farmers from across the district under the banner of Bharatiya Kisan Union (Lakhowal) staged a massive protest dharna and laid siege to the office of Deputy Commissioner in Phase I here on Monday.

The peasants were protesting against the distress sale of paddy 1,121 in the grain markets and the failure of the government to take any note of the matter.

Union district president Bahadur Singh Sill,senior leaders Sewa Singh,Ajmer Singh,Charan Singh,Sharanjit Singh,Rajwinder Singh and Gurmukh Singh addressed the dharna and demanded higher minimum support price for paddy 1,121 to save the farmers from suffering heavy losses due to the present distress sale. During the protest,the farmers blocked vehicular traffic passing in front of the DC office,following which the local police have to divert the traffic from alternate routes.
