The Rail Budget left the residents of the city disappointed with the no sops being offered for the city. The increase in the passenger fare witnessed a mixed reaction among the residents. While some opined that it was justified if better facilities are provided,it did not auger well for others. Sunil Pruthi,a software developer said,Fare hike for general and sleeper should have been steeper as compared to AC in order to decrease cross subsidy. The fare hike is justified only if the passengers get proper amenities and services. Contrary to this,Anita Gaba,a housewife said,The fare hike is not justified for a common man who travels in sleeper and general class compartments. There is already a hike in the freight charges. President of Chamber of Chandigarh Industries Naveen Manglani termed the revision in fares as uncalled for. He said that the Railways have been generating additional revenue through increasing tatkal quota seats,revising goods freight as well as online reservation charges. He added that a Duronto Train to Mumbai was required and there was a need to improve the conditions of hygiene. In terms of safety and maintenance,majority of the people seem to be happy with the special housekeeping body to be set up for stations and trains in the next six months provided the decision is actually implemented and does not remain just on paper. The Indian Rail is really in a need for proper maintenance and cleanliness. Independent railway safety authority to be set up as statutory safety body is a good move only if it works,says Sunil Hooda,a PU student. He further added that the minimum fare of the platform ticket which has also been increased to Rs 5 is a good step but in return we should be provided safety,clean platforms with clean waiting rooms and other facilities. In terms of providing services like escalators and foot over-bridge has still no scope of implementation. Jaspal Matharu,an Industrialist said that the rail minister has announced to provide this service but people are not sure about when this project will come into action and the results will be seen.
