Two days after four workers lost their lives while cleaning the sewerage tank in a meat plant at Behra village near Derabassi, the police are yet to make any arrest. Three persons were booked for culpable homicide after the incident.
Derabassi Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Dr Darpan Ahluwalia said that they were yet to arrest the accused.
Asked if any violations were found, Deputy Commissioner Aashika Jain said that the inquiry was going on.
Meanwhile, it came to light that Federal Agro, where the incident had happened, remained in controversies. In July 2018, the then Punjab industries minister Om Parkash Soni visited the factory and asked the Pollution Control Board and Environment Department to keep a close eye on alleged water contamination by the factory.
Four workers — Janak Thaapa, Sridhar Pandey, both residents of Nepal, Kurwan, a resident of Bihar, and Manak Singh — a resident of Behra village died while cleaning the tank.
The body of fourth victim Janak Thapa was handed over to his family after a post-mortem examination.
A police officer told The Indian Express that they have brought the matter of violence by some other meat plants to the notice of senior officers. The officer added that the preliminary investigation suggested that the incident had happened due to negligence on part of the factory management.
The meant plant is permitted to slaughter 1,200 animals in a day with a processing capacity of 170 tonne per day.
