Espionage case: Court extends YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra’s judicial custody till Sept 2

The 33-year-old vlogger from Haryana was arrested on May 16 this year for allegedly spying for Pakistani intelligence agencies. A Hisar court Monday extended the judicial custody of YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra, who was arrested in May this year on suspicion of espionage, till September 2. Malhotra was produced before judicial magistrate (first class) Sunil Kumar who remanded her to judicial custody till September 2.

Hisar Superintendent of Police Shashank Kumar Sawan had earlier stated that the accused was in contact with some people knowing that they are Pakistan Intelligence Operatives (PIOs).

Police sources had earlier said she was in touch with Ehsan-ur-Rahim alias Danish, a staffer at the Pakistani High Commission, since November 2023. India expelled Danish on May 13 for allegedly indulging in espionage.

According to Sawan, the police had seized three mobile phones, a laptop and some other electronic devices from the accused.

Malhotra runs a YouTube channel — Travel with Jo — with over 3,77,000 subscribers and an Instagram account with over 1,32,000 followers.

“She visited Pakistan multiple times and also went to China once. We are analysing her financial transactions and travel details. She was in touch with PIOs (Pakistan Intelligence Operatives). She did not have direct access to military or defence information, though Hisar is a strategic location,” the SP had said earlier.

Police had also claimed Pakistani intelligence operatives were developing Malhotra as an “asset”

Malhotra was arrested from the New Aggarwal Extension area in Hisar district and booked under Sections 3 and 5 of the Official Secrets Act and Section 152 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (acts that endanger the sovereignty, unity, and integrity of India).
