Effluent treatment plant meets HC deadline

The much-awaited common effluent treatment plant in Jalandhar, one of the biggest in the region, was made operational on Sunday at the Leather Complex here.

The much-awaited common effluent treatment plant (CETP) in Jalandhar, one of the biggest in the region, was made operational on Sunday at the Leather Complex here. With the plant in place, only treated water will now be released in the Kala Sanghia drain,a rainwater drain that had turned into a slush of industry and sewer waste over the last decade. As the drain meets the Sutlej river, people in the Malwa region were forced to drink this polluted water till now.

The plant was commissioned in the presence of Director and Additional Secretary-cum-Chariman of Punjab Effluent Treatment Societies (PETS) H S Bains.

This CETP has a capacity to treat 5 million litres per day (MLD) industry effluent every day. The total cost of the project, equally shared by the state and Central governments,is Rs 18.8 crore.

This is the second module of the existing CETP that was treating 1.5 MLD waste.

Ajay Sharma,Director,PETS,said they went all out to make the plant functional by August 1,2010,the cut-off date fixed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. He said lack of electricity connection was the main hurdle in making the CETP operational. Powercom granted connection for the project on July 30.

Designed by the Central Leather Research Institute, the plant has been constructed by Ramky Infrastructure Ltd.

Punjab Pollution Control Board Member Secretary Dr Babu Ram,Additional Director,Industry,Harbhajan Singh and PPCB Executive Officer Harbir Singh were present on the occasion.
