Educated youth should help disadvantaged sections of society : Patil

While emphasising the need for building human resources through quality education,President Pratibha Devisingh Patil urged youth to channelise their energies and enthusiasm into constructive and productive work to ensure a strong nation.

While emphasising the need for building human resources through quality education,President Pratibha Devisingh Patil urged youth to channelise their energies and enthusiasm into constructive and productive work to ensure a strong nation. Speaking at the convocation of Kurukshetra University on Wednesday,she said educated youth should help uplift the disadvantaged sections of society and become messengers of change.

“I am very happy to be in Kurukshetra,an ancient location of great importance. It is here that the battle of Mahabharata took place and the profound message of the Bhagavad Gita was given,which has continued to guide and inspire us through the ages. I am happy to be here today at your convocati”n,” Patil said.

Referring to passages in the Gita,Patil urged the gathering to do their duty with single-minded focus and work selflessly. “Education should also make you realise that you need to work with others in a spirit of cooperation,tolerance and understanding to build a harmonious world”,she said. She said that the universities should give the nation economic vitality,scientific prowess,a broad outline of social change and global competitiveness,through innovation and research. The activities of good universities must strive to contribute to the richness of the cultural,literary and social aspects of human behaviour.

Patil said she was particularly elated to note that all the eleven gold medallists were girls. Stressing the need for exchanges between students and educational institutions to build deeper cooperation between countries,the President said that in a globalised village that the world has been reduced to,nations,cultures and civilisations were more connected today than ever before.

In his address,Mauritius Prime Minister Navindchandra Ramgoolam said that Mauritius and India are deeply connected as they have a common culture. India and Mauritius can work together in the fields of education,culture and economy and this would help both the countries,he said before adding that India was recognised worldwide as a major economic and political power.

Governor and Kurukshetra University Chancellor Jagannath Pahadia said Haryana was quickly developing as an education hub. Haryana being a small state with 1.37 per cent of geographical area and 2 per cent of Population has been contributing to the progress of the country,he added.

Earlier the President inaugurated an audio-visual gallery on the Mahabharata and Gita at the Sri Krishna Museum in Kurukshetra and described the museum as a unique place where valuable information concerning various incidents of the battle of Mahabharta has been provided in addition to the display of ancient objects concerning Mahabharta.
