Drunk cop’s gun goes off at MLA residence

“The patient was in an inebriated state and appeared to be mentally upset. He is out of danger now as the bullet did not enter his skull,” said a doctor at the hospital.

MLA from Guruharsahai constituency,Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi,said: “Kumar is my ex-gunman and had come to meet his old friends at my residence. While he was sitting with them,he took out his service revolver for cleaning when it accidentally went off. He was later taken to the General Hospital by other guards.”

Kumar was posted at Sodhi’s residence for the last seven years,and it was only a fortnight ago that he was deputed on duty as gunman with Haryana Deputy Inspector General of Police Shatrujit Singh Kapoor.

A friend of Kumar,Amarjeet Singh,said: “He had gone to the Sector-4 residence of the MLA today for some work and was reportedly cleaning his pistol when it went off.”

While Kumar described the episode as an ‘accident’ in his police statement,his wife Sudesh said: “Everything was fine till last night. He left this morning for duty and it was in the evening that two policemen came to my place and told me that my husband is in hospital.”

Talking to Newsline,Superintendent of Police (Panchkula) A S Dhillon,however,maintained that the police are still verifying the facts. “We are still investigating the matter and a departmental action is not ruled out at this stage. In his statement,the victim has claimed that the gun went off accidentally,” added Dhillon.
