A dramatic baby-swapping controversy at Sohana Multispecialty Hospital ended Friday after DNA tests confirmed the newborn girls’ parentage beyond doubt, the hospital management announced.
The row erupted after Sandeep Singh, whose wife delivered on September 11, alleged that the hospital had first shown him a baby boy and later handed over a girl. Hospital administrators said that they tried to convince the parents, but eventually sought police intervention to facilitate a DNA test.
Hospital officials said the DNA report, opened in the presence of the Sohana SHO, the baby’s family, and other dignitaries, provided “100% proof that Sandeep Singh and Ramanpreet Kaur, residents of Karnal, are the biological parents of the baby girl”.
“Today, we are happy that the DNA report has arrived, and it has been proven beyond doubt that the baby girl belongs to the couple,” said Chief Administrator Adarsh Suri, adding that the institution “takes pride in its ethical and quality service over the years”.
Doctors Nisha Manon and Akanksha Dogra, who supervised the delivery and postnatal care, said, “All hospital protocols were followed and video evidence showed the baby girl was presented to the parents immediately after birth.”
The hospital also condemned gender discrimination, noting the couple already have two daughters and were blessed with another girl after 11 years. “A child, boy or girl, is God’s blessing. Society must not discriminate,” the hospital management said.
CA Suri, Dr Manvir Singh and CEO Dr Gagandeep Sachdeva confirmed that the DNA report had been opened before the SHO, parents and other witnesses. “The father himself told us after the report that everything is fine and they accept the child,” Suri said.
Calling the initial allegation “a completely fabricated story,” the hospital said, “No staff member had ever claimed the baby was a boy.”
With the DNA report now public, the hospital said it would continue to provide “ethical, quality healthcare” and hoped the case would send a strong message against gender bias.
Notably, the family had sought the intervention of Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, who spoke with the Director General of the Punjab Police.
Acting on the DGP’s instructions, the family was advised to resolve the matter through a DNA test, and both families agreed to have the baby’s DNA tested along with the parents’ DNAs.
Sohana SHO Amanpreet Singh said, “On September 11, a family from a village near Karnal came to this hospital for a delivery. The family alleged that their baby was a boy, but the hospital card recorded the baby as a girl. Following this, the family filed a complaint at the Sohna police station, and we held discussions to verify the matter.”
“At that time, the hospital management proposed a DNA test to clarify everything, stating there had been no negligence on the hospital’s part. The DNA test was carried out, following the complete procedure. Today, the result arrived. The sealed envelope was opened in the presence of the family and other respected individuals. The report showed the baby’s DNA matched 100% with the mother and father,” the SHO said.
“After seeing the report, the family accepted that the baby girl is theirs. And thus, the matter was fully resolved,” the SHO added.
