Senior BJP leader Harmohan Dhawan took up the issue of the colony dwellers with the Additional Deputy Commissioner on Monday.

Senior BJP leader Harmohan Dhawan took up the issue of the colony dwellers with the Additional Deputy Commissioner on Monday. An open letter for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was handed over to the ADC complaining about the implementation of the rehabilitation scheme.

In the letter,Dhawan stated it was in 1991 when Chander Shekhar, the then Prime Minister chalked out a plan to rehabilitate the slum dwellers and give them permanent accommodation. Under the scheme, all slum dwellers were to be rehabilitate in five years to make Chandigarh the first slum free city in the country.

Dhawan also mentioned that while the Prime Minister had come to hand over keys of the tenements under the rehabilitation scheme in Chandigarh, there is a huge difference between the sample flats that he was shown and the flats that were allotted. Dhawan alleged that the PM was misguided and was kept in the dark. He said the size of the room is too small for a family of five to six. There is no provision of kitchen in these flats.

The letter states that for a population of around 40,000 that is to be shifted here, basic amenities have not been provided. There are no schools for their children. Arrangement for electricity and water is also not proper.

Dhawan said that the clause of flats being given for 20 years on licence is not justified and the allottees should be given ownership of the flat. In his letter,Dhawan demanded that further demolition should be stalled till proper amenities are provided.

Dhawan protested at the site where Colony Number 5 was being demolished. He was arrested and kept at Burail Jail till the demolition was complete.
