Dhanteras effect: 550 gold coins sold at GPO,470 at SBI in 2 days

Amid the festivities of Dhanteras,550 gold coins of different denominations were sold at the General Post Office (GPO),Sector 17,in the last two days. With the good omen of Dhanteras starting on Monday and continuing till Tuesday morning,people had been rushing to purchase the coins.

About 500 gold coin sales were reported on Monday while nearly 50 coins were sold on Tuesday,against the average sale of three-four gold coins a week. The GPO senior post master said,“Ever since gold prices started shooting up in the past couple of months,we saw a dip in the sale of coins at our post office. However,the festive season has motivated buyers to make purchases despite the hike in the price of gold

Meanwhile,the sale of gold coins at banks too saw a rise on both the days of Dhanteras. As many as 300 gold coins of different denominations,including 10 gram,25 gram and 50 grams,were sold at SBI on Monday while 170 coin sales were reported on Tuesday.

“People have been rushing in to purchase gold coins as the resale value of coins remains 100 per cent and by making the purchases on auspicious occasions,they wish for a rise in their family’s prosperity,” said SBI Assistant General Manager N K Talwar. With a 1 per cent discount being offered both at banks and the GPO,the price of 24-carat gold was scaled at Rs 29,000 per 10 gram on Monday and Tuesday.

The GPO has come up with a special festive discount for gold coin sales till November 30. A discount of around 5 per cent was offered on purchase of gold of up to 5 gm and a discount of 5.5 per cent between 20 gm and 50 gm. On purchase of 100 gm and above,a discount of 7 per cent was offered.
