It was a day of wait and meetings with Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, apart from sports officials, for Tokyo Paralympics multiple medallist and shooter Singhraj Adhana and parents of Paris Olympics qualified Haryana players and Asian Para Games/Asian Games, CWG medallists for the delay in getting cash awards for national and international events, including Para Asian games and ISSF World Cup/Championships.

While Adhana had competed in Para Asian Games in Hangzhou, fellow shooter Tokyo Paralympics gold medallist Manish Narwal, who had won a bronze in the P1 10 m air pistol SH1 category, and they are still awaiting the prize money for the Asian Para Games.

“We had come to meet the Haryana CM to tell him about the delay in releasing the prize money for the Asian Para games medallists from the state and the delay in releasing cash awards for para shooters as well shooters for international events, including world cup and world championships from 2021 to present. After listening to our grievances, he assured us of quick resolution,” Adhana told The Indian Express.

Adhana was accompanied by the parents of more than 15 shooters from the state, apart from para shooters Deepak Saini, Krishan Kumar and Rahul Jakhar. While Haryana is sending six shooters to the Paris Olympics, more than 60 shooters from the state have not received cash awards for international events other than the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games. This includes multiple medals won in ISSF, the sport’s world governing body, organised World Championships/World Cups as well national competitions. While the parents of some of the Paris Olympics-qualified shooters also met the Haryana CM, rifle shooter Ramita Jindal’s father informed the shooters were not given Rs 5 lakh for the preparations for the Paris Olympics as announced by the Haryana government. “None of the Paris Olympics-qualified shooters, including my daughter Ramita Jindal, have been given Rs 5 lakh for the preparations of the Paris Olympics. Now that they have reached Paris, what more can we say? We have also been waiting for cash awards for the international events from 2021 to date. For a young shooter, such cash awards are a must to sustain and motivate them. While Ramita got the cash award for the Asian Games bronze, many shooters need cash awards for international events for their training needs. Haryana is number one in terms of medals won for the country and we expect such things not to happen in Haryana,” said Arvind Kumar Jindal, the father of Asian Games bronze medallist 10m air rifle shooter Ramita Jindal.

Another parent said after the Haryana CM took cognisance of the matter, they were expecting a quick resolution of the issue. “We are glad that the Haryana CM assured us of quick resolution of the issues,” said the parent, whose ward had won a medal in the Asian Para Games.

The players and their parents also met the Haryana Director of Sports, Yashendra Singh. Singh called a meeting of the Haryana Cash Awards Sports Committee on Wednesday to resolve the issue. “Some of the para shooters and the parents of international medallists in the shooting met me today. There are some technical reasons which the sports department wanted to verify. I have called a meeting of the cash awards committee, along with two representatives from the shooters, on Wednesday. We will work to resolve their issues, at the earliest,” Singh told The Indian Express.
