Defence picks holes in CBI story

For all its efforts to build a strong case,CBI has not unanswered some key questions.

For all its efforts to build a strong case,CBI has not unanswered some key questions. The agency was attacked on Thursday by the defence team for conducting an investigation full of “deficiencies”. For instance:

If the bribe money was actually meant for Manoranjan Kalia,as claimed by the CBI,why did the CBI not let the money reach the “beneficiary” and catch him red handed? The cash amount of Rs 15 lakh was recovered from the vehicle of Devinder Singh, official of Registrar,Firms and Societies,Punjab.

Why did the CBI not wait for Devinder Singh to hand over the money and cheques to Raj Khurana?

Neither the bribe money nor the cheques were recovered from the possession of Raj Khurana or his residence.

CBI will have to prove cheques recovered from the vehicle of Devinder Singh were actually meant for Raj Khurana. “The cheques could have been filled for anybody. Never have I heard bribe is paid through cheques,” said defence Advocate Rabindra Pandit.

As per the defence,Devinder Singh is not a government employee. But CBI claimed that Singh is official of Registrar,Firms and Societies. “Devinder is a property dealer and not a government official. CBI has misled the court by stating he is a government official. If an individual is roaming around with cheques and cash of Rs 15 lakh how is a corruption case made out against him,” said Pandit.
