Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini Thursday visited the family of senior IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, who was found dead in his Chandigarh home Tuesday, as his wife and IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, reiterated her demands seeking action against “powerful high-ranking officials” in his state, as well as permanent security cover for her family citing “serious threat and mental distress”.

CM Saini visited the bereaved family of IPS officer Y Puran Singh at their official residence in Sector 24, Chandigarh. Anurag Rastogi, Chief Secretary, Haryana, and a few senior officers also met Amneet P Kumar.

During her meeting with the Haryana chief minister, which lasted nearly an hour, Amneet P Kumar also handed over her representation to him.

“Immediate registration of FIR against all the individuals named in the suicide note and the accompanying complaint (lodged by her yesterday); immediate suspension and arrest of all accused persons to prevent interference, tampering of evidence, or influence over the investigation; provision of permanent security cover for her family, especially two daughters, who are under serious threat and mental distress; and protection of the family’s rights and dignity as we continue to face harassment and fear from those responsible,” she said in her representation.

‘His tragic death caused deep sorrow and outrage’

Seeking Saini’s intervention, Amneet told him that even after 48 hours since her husband, Y Puran Kumar, died, the “Chandigarh Police are yet to register an FIR against those responsible for his death”.

“The reason for no action being taken is that the powerful, high-ranking officials of Haryana Police and Administration are accused in the case, and they are influencing the Chandigarh Police. There is serious apprehension in my mind that after this complaint, these high-ranking, powerful officials will try to malign me and my family and will also try to implicate me departmentally or otherwise,” Amneet wrote in her representation.

She added that her husband was an “exceptional officer” and a “prominent representative and pillar of strength for the Scheduled Caste community”. “He stood as a source of inspiration and guidance for countless individuals from marginalised sections of society. His life and service gave hope and pride to millions who saw in him a symbol of empowerment and justice,” Amneet wrote in her representation to Saini.

“His tragic death has, therefore, caused deep sorrow and outrage, particularly among the SC community, whose faith in equality and justice has been gravely shaken.”

She added that Y Puran Kumar was a “decorated police officer, who was also a recipient of the President’s Medal for Meritorious Service, and throughout his illustrious career, he remained a symbol of honesty, discipline and fearless commitment to duty”.

‘Well-planned conspiracy’

Haryana Chief Minister Saini cancelled his press conference scheduled for Thursday, and visited the family of senior IPS officer Y Puran Kumar.

Meanwhile, Amneet has yet not given her consent for the post-mortem examination of her husband’s body, and reiterated her demand seeking action against SS Kapur, Director General of Police, Haryana, and Narender Bijarniya, Superintendent of Police, Rohtak.

She filed a police complaint seeking an FIR against Kapur and Bijarniya, alleging a “well-planned conspiracy” to implicate Kumar in a “frivolous and mischievous complaint by fabricating false evidence”.

Amneet was part of the government’s official delegation to Japan since October 5, and returned to Chandigarh Wednesday.

In a purported “suicide note”, Y Puran Kumar, 52, has named nine serving IPS officers of the Haryana Police, a retired IPS officer, and three retired IAS officers, and has alleged “caste-based discrimination, public humiliation, targeted mental harassment and atrocities”.

Y Puran Singh, the 2001-batch IPS officer, was posted as Inspector General, Police Training Centre, Sunaria-Rohtak, on September 25.
