CTU staffers’ union puts off strike

The employees had planned not to ply buses on Tuesday.

The members of the employees’ union of Chandigarh Transport Undertaking on Monday decided to postpone by a month their proposed strike which was to be held on Tuesday. The employees had planned not to ply buses on Tuesday.

After holding a meeting with the CTU officials, the union members postponed the strike. President of the CTU union Bhupinder Singh said that the union members held a meeting with the CTU director and were assured that their demands would be met within one month’s time.

The members of the union have several demands. One of them is recruitment of new staff. The union claims that they are short-staffed and the present staff is overworked. There are not enough drivers for the buses and with plans to add more buses to the fleet, fresh recruitment will be required.

The union is also demanding that the buses that have been condemned should be auctioned, and no recovery should be made from the drivers for damage of any sort which is the practice now. Money is deducted from the salaries of the drivers.

A few weeks ago,the CTU union, which is demanding that a workshop for technicians be organised, had held a two-hour strike during which no buses plied. This had caused inconvenience to commuters, especially students.
